Monogram Information
A monogram is a motif created by overlapping or combining two or more letters to form one symbol. This personal "logo" is made by combining the initials of an individual, couple or family in an artful way. A monogram can also be a single letter, name or motif. Monograms have two purposes: they make it possible to "brand" one's possessions and they serve as a decorative function. While the word itself indicates a single letter (mono), two-letter and three-letter monograms are often used with the latter becoming the most popular in use today.

A couple that gets married and decides to use the husband's last name usually has no problem designing their monogram. Some even switch the placement of the first name initials around according to the item on which the monogram will be placed, for instance whether it is more important to the wife or the husband.

Individuals with more than three initials, or hyphenated or blended names, have made monogram designing more complicated. Since the rules for monogramming have not been revised to go along with all the new lifestyle changes there is some confusion. Last names such as O'Conner, Griffin-Johnson, DeMassa or de Castro can create problems. These names actually could use two letters for the last name initial, even though most people choose just the first initial. One innovative idea is to overlap both letters for a single last name initial. If you fall under this category please contact us for a personal consultation.
